The NAACP challenged the law and won a legal victory in 1915 when the U.S. This “grandfather clause” enabled illiterate whites to avoid taking the literacy test while discriminating against illiterate Black people, whose ancestors weren’t afforded the right to vote-despite the 15th Amendment-by requiring them to pass a test in order to vote. In 1910, Oklahoma passed a constitutional amendment allowing people whose grandfathers had been eligible to vote in 1866 to register without passing a literacy test. Since its inception, the NAACP has worked to achieve its goals through the judicial system, lobbying and peaceful protests. In 1910, Du Bois started The Crisis, which became the leading publication for Black writers it remains in publication today. Du Bois, the only Black person on the initial leadership team, served as director of publications and research. In its charter, the NAACP promised to champion equal rights and eliminate racial prejudice, and to “advance the interest of colored citizens” in regard to voting rights, legal justice and educational and employment opportunities.Ī white lawyer, Moorfield Storey, became the NAACP’s first president. Some early members of the organization, which included suffragists, social workers, journalists, labor reformers, intellectuals and others, had been involved in the Niagara Movement, a civil rights group started in 1905 and led by Du Bois, a sociologist and writer. Wells, Archibald Grimke and Mary Church Terrell. The NAACP’s founding members included white progressives Mary White Ovington, Henry Moskowitz, William English Walling and Oswald Garrison Villard, along with such African Americans as W.E.B. In that event, two Black men being held in a Springfield jail for alleged crimes against white people were surreptitiously transferred to a jail in another city, spurring a white mob to burn down 40 homes in Springfield’s Black residential district, ransack local businesses and murder two Blacks. The NAACP was established in February 1909 in New York City by an interracial group of activists, partially in response to the 1908 Springfield race riot in Illinois.

The teddy bear poems or collection of Nana’s recipes takes on greater resonance as it metamorphizes from homework chore to beautiful book.Īs I’ve written in previous articles, one of the noblest goals of education is to create memories. The transcribed story of a pre-writer could become the first book a fledgling author reads to her proud parents. Students might write more and with greater care if their work resulted in an actual book. For students who have a large body of written work, there is an ever-growing array of “vanity press” sites where they can create, publish, and print books on demand. Countless web sites will turn your art into a wide array of learning memorabilia. Sites like and make it easy for you or your students to create books-on-demand. iPhoto can be used to generate spectacular books chronicling a project’s development or life in your classroom. One of the most exciting revolutions in printing since the invention of movable type is happening right now: print-on-demand. Some tools, like Pixie, are equally suited for sharing work either way, allowing students to publish work as podcasts or online storybooks as well as printing greeting cards, booklets and graphic novels. Paper-based student work can become a family heirloom and be cherished for generations. Web pages, podcasts, PDFs, and YouTube videos are great ways to share student work, especially when a project is enhanced by digital publication, but paper is timeless. Some of these “learning stories” are memorialized in absolutely gorgeous books-not eBooks, but good old-fashioned paper ones. Teachers there investigate the thinking of children by meticulously documenting what students do and say while engaged in projects and social interactions. I was reminded of the power of paper during my recent study trip in Reggio Emilia, Italy. But wait! Let’s not forget the value of paper! Ah, Paper Many educators have embraced this technology fully and in many computer labs and technology-rich classrooms this aesthetic transition is in full bloom. Computer graphics, digital storytelling, movies, animations, simulations, and video games are all screen-based. More so today than ever before, it is clear that many forms of student work live only on the computer screen. Papert believes, like many of us, that the construction of shareable artifacts-a poem, a robot, a computer program, a musical composition-is an effective way of ensuring the construction of mental models. He calls this idea “constructionism.” Papert refers to the computer as a raw material with which you can make all sorts of things. The advent of the personal computer 30 years ago was greeted by the metaphor of “computer as tool.” Seymour Papert, who worked with renowned educational theorist Piaget, combines the constructivist idea that learning is an active process with the research-backed concept that learning happens most effectively when people actively make things in the real world. We must operate from a perspective that children are competent, talented, and capable. While every project may not generate an objet d’art, we should assume that every project we undertake has the potential to do so. Interesting, timely, relevant, sophisticated, moving, whimsical, charming, thoughtful, original, clever, imaginative, and innovative are all attributes that contribute to a good project. While cuteness may be a desirable attribute of student projects, good is even more desirable–and there is no reason why student products cannot be both cute and good. Sometimes we overlook shortcomings in a final product because the result is… well… cute. Knowledge is a consequence of experience, and open-ended creativity tools expand opportunities for such knowledge construction.Įmphasizing the process-the “doing” part of project work-should not cause us to lower our expectations for the final product. As teachers, we often promote the idea that process is more important than the end product, yet it is often the product itself that provides context and motivates students to learn. An authentic, or real-world, audience for one’s work is a mighty motivator. Making things provides a powerful context for learning. Upon loading up the level, the game generates a few missions for the player to complete: upon failure or success of all of these missions, the game allows the player to head to the next floor. While there is permadeath, the layout of the game is very unusual by the standards of traditional roguelikes. The game is billed as a cross between roguelikes and Immersive Sim games, such as Deus Ex. The player can use explosives, burn down buildings, flood air vents with poison gas, shoot up both banks and drug dens, and generally cause ridiculous amounts of chaos in an urban environment. In practice, procedural mayhem and wanton death is more likely to ensure. Follow me closely! In the bartending world, the difference between success and failure is skill. These courses will teach you the proper practices to avoid wasting money by over-pouring drinks.īartending isn’t rocket science, but it does take more than simply the ability to memorize cocktail formulas.īasically, online bartending courses provide a stress-free atmosphere in which to learn these skills. However, it’s possible that you’re only seeking a legal position. If that’s the case, go online and secure any municipal permits or certifications you’ll need to run a bar. There is no need for a formal bartending school.īefore we wrap it up, let’s talk about bartending certification and license and also clear some misconceptions people have around it. Like bartending certificates, there is no formal national bartender licensure. A bartender license can refer to two things. First, what a bartending school gives you when you complete the course. Second, what the local laws require to tend bar. Let’s use the state of Texas as an example. In Texas, you can enroll in a bartending school and complete approximately 40 hours of instruction to get a bartending license. In Texas, however, only the TABC certification, or Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission certification, is required to work as a bartender. This accreditation is primarily focused on alcohol awareness and prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors or inebriated individuals. How You Can Get a Licenseīasically, to get a bartending license, you have to enroll in an online or traditional bartending course. On the other way round, you can choose to find out your state’s local laws requirements for anyone who wants to work in a bar. Read our in-depth DJI Mavic 3 Pro review. But if you want a top-spec drone that’s more portable and less expensive than the Inspire 3, the Mavic 3 offers it all – plus two telephotos. Its weight also puts it into the restrictive C2 European drone category. That said, its pro-tier video modes, as well as its price tag, make it overkill for beginners. That said, both telephoto cameras produce excellent images, and the option to zoom in 3x and 7x is fantastically useful in a range of scenarios.ĭespite being a pro drone, we found the Mavic 3 Pro incredibly easy to fly, aided by excellent safety features that make it accessible to all users. It’s also the winner in terms of adjustable aperture, formats and frame rates. In our review, we found the image quality of the main 24mm Four Thirds camera – the same one used by the Mavic 3 Classic (below) – the best. But if you’re an aerial photographer or videographer in search of the most versatile drone on the market, the results of our testing suggest the Mavic 3 Pro is the premium pick for you. ❌ You’re on a tight budget: As one of the most expensive consumer drones on the market, the Mavic 3 Pro is a premium option.ĭJI’s new flagship is the first consumer drone with three cameras. ❌ You’re a complete novice: The Mavic 3 Pro is easy to fly, but the Mini 3 offers a lot for beginners at a lower price and weight. As a middle ground between the more affordable Mini 3 Pro and the highly capable Mavic 3 Pro, it makes a lot of sense. That said, we think beginners will have no issue piloting the Air 3, thanks to its easy interface and useful safety features. Fixed apertures aren’t helpful for users of ND filters, but we found that the 3x zoom lens allows you to work at a safe and legal distance from subjects, a particularly useful feature if you’re recording wildlife.īecause the DJI Air 3 is a big drone, many novices will find the Mini 3 more manageable. In testing, we found image quality class-leading, as we’ve come to expect from DJI. But you also get a lot of benefits for the extra baggage, including a generous 46-minute flight time. A 720g take-off weight puts the Air 3 in Europe’s C1 category, meaning it’s subject to more restrictions than the sub-250g drones in this list. With dual cameras and improved wind resistance, the DJI Air 3 represents a significant upgrade over the already capable Air 2S from 2021. ❌ You want variable apertures: Both of the Air 3’s lenses have fixed apertures, which are particularly restrictive if you use ND filters. ❌ You want a starter drone: The DJI Air 3 is fine for beginners to fly, but novices might find the smaller and lighter Mini 3 more manageable. Read our in-depth DJI Mini 3 Pro reviewīest all-round drone for aerial photographers. If you can stretch your budget to include the DJI RC controller, you’ll land the best backpack-friendly bundle for aerial photography and video, bar none. We also liked the option to rotate its camera by 90 degrees for crop-free portrait recording. Together with automated flight modes, this makes it an easy drone for beginners to operate. Its three-directional obstacle avoidance worked well in testing. We also encountered very little noise even at the maximum ISO 6400, while the combination of a bright f/1.7 lens and dual native ISO tech gives the Mini 3 Pro impressive low-light performance. In our review, we found that the Mini 3 Pro’s 12.1MP 1/1.3-inch sensor produced excellent image quality. For the money, you get a far superior camera, obstacle avoidance sensors and a range of in-flight features that you’d normally only find on larger drones. It’s more expensive than previous editions of the Mini, but that extra cost yields a huge upgrade over the Mini 2. Packing the performance of bigger drones into convenient proportions, we think the DJI Mini 3 Pro is the best compact drone you can buy. ❌ You already own a DJI Mavic Air 2: It has a larger sensor and portrait mode, but the Mini 3 Pro isn’t a huge upgrade over the Air 2. ❌ You need the best image quality: If you want the sharpest aerial images, you’re better off with Mavic 3’s Micro Four Thirds sensor. And if you were to use that voice for an NPC. But it's become so iconic that it's how we all now think a Shatner impersonation has to have. despite the fact that Shatner himself doesn't talk that way much at all. This is why every single Shatner impression that ever gets done has the same exact halting cadence and emphasis that Kevin Pollak originated as the "Shatner gimmick" 20+ years ago. All they can do is say "Hey, your tavernkeeper is Bill Clinton!" you no longer are inhabiting an NPC (as far as the players are concerned). you end up focusing your voice on the "gimmick" of that comedian's impersonation, thereby making it blatantly obvious whose voice you are doing. they do their own take on someone else's impression of these people. (I am not willing to lose all my open applications and window configurations, at this time. It is accordingly no longer reasonable that the update is not being offered to me due to staggered updates.Ĭan anyone think of a way to solve this without my having to attempt multiple system restarts, nor enter safe mode, nor use Recovery. This issue remains outstanding, over 2 weeks after the release of 12.6.3. sudo rm -f /Library/Preferences/ ~/Library/Preferences/ I have also attempted to reset the Software Update caches, via the below command, and then checking Software Update again, to no avail. I have already tried restarting normally (re-opening open applications), to ensure that this is not the result of some stuck process. Finally, attempting to install 12.6.3 via the App. sudo softwareupdate -list-full-installers correctly lists "macOS Monterey, Version: 12.6.3, Size: 12115350KiB, Build: 21G419", as one of 7 options, but nothing I do appears to be able to actually install it that way. The "More Info…" dialogue no longer shows for me at all (i.e., the update option for Monterey is non-existent, not merely hidden by the Ventura upgrade option).Īdditionally, checking for updates via sudo softwareupdate -l, incorrectly returns "No new software available". Indeed, I used it earlier this same week, to update to the latest version of Safari, though that dialogue still had not listed macOS 12.6.3 as an option, despite its having been co-released. In particular, Software Update only shows the upgrade option (currently to 13.2, which I am not ready to undertake). This is due to the unusually substantial security updates contained in this release. I am hoping to avoid a Ventura upgrade at this time, and to update Monterey soon (irrespective of its possible staged update roll-out). I am using a MacBook, with an Apple silicon chip. I am not able to update my macOS, from version 12.6.2 → 12.6.3. The installment marks the debut of Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore, who assumed the role after Richard Harris’ death in 2002.
